Don’t Hate Me Because I’m Beautiful:
A Practical Guide to the Microsoft Dynamics NAV RoleTailored Client
“Don’t hate me because I’m beautiful!” I feel like this is what the Microsoft Dynamics NAV RoleTailored Client would say (if it could talk) to Classic Client users who are hesitant to move to it. Why is that?
Today if you mention migrating to the RoleTailored Client in a room full of Classic Client users, you will get a mix of responses. People seem to really love it or hate it. Some people can’t wait to move to it and others are petrified of it.
I presented a couple of sessions on the RTC over the last two years at NAVUG Forum and Microsoft Dynamics Convergence, and I will say I was impressed at how many people raised their hands in my session to say they were going to move to the RTC.
I think attitudes are changing, and people are realizing that there are efficiencies that can be gained by moving to the RTC, but I still think, unfortunately, the RTC is underappreciated because it is seen as just a pretty interface and not much more.
The RTC has so much to offer.
For example, did you know that:
- The RTC allows you to save filters?
- The search functionality lets you search for a page or list across all menus?
- On list pages you can freeze columns like in Excel?
- There are three ways to make role centers your own: personalization, configuration and customization?
- When a change is made by a developer, you will no longer lose the order of your columns?
- You can give a manager or lead the ability to log in and configure a role for a group of users?
And that’s just the beginning. The RTC offers so many efficiencies and features, they can’t be contained in one or even a few blogs. That’s why I decided to begin writing this series—to share what I’ve learned about the RTC and what it has to offer, why I think it’s a great move for any company to make, but also to help those of you who are thinking of making the move to do it right from the very beginning. My blogs will include topics like why role tailoring is so important, how to gather requirements, personalization, configuration, and customization, and other areas that are critical to getting the most from the RTC.
So, if you’re considering moving to the RTC and are still on the fence, I hope this series will help you with your decision. If you’ve made the decision, I hope I can give you some advice that will make the implementation go smoother, and if you’re already a fan of the RTC, I hope I can provide you with some tips and tricks that can help you get more from your RTC. Most importantly, wherever you stand, I welcome your feedback, questions, input, advice, and concerns!
