Forum Post: Inventory Visibility/Availability with Assemblies/Assembles BoM’s

We are a computer refurbisher and wholesaler with a specific requirement as regards inventory visibility. We’re very much new to the ERP/NAV platform so my apologies if any concepts or terminology is out of sync.

As computers do not change form when they are assembled/in assemblies (as opposed to a manufactured chair, for example) we require the system to recognise components and sub-assembles held within assemblies as inventory that is available for use elsewhere, and therefore visible in the ‘available’ calculations within inventory.

To clarify: Assemblies and sub-assemblies within our inventory are always kits which can be dis-assembled, rather than manufactured goods which have changed form.

Example:

When purchasing 1000 x Desktop PC’s all with 4 x 1GB RAM in each, it doesn’t always make sense to dis-assemble those 1000 PC’s so we will inventory them complete as sub-assemblies comprising the PC chassis and the 4 x 1GB RAM.

When accessing the inventory database there should be both the option to see how many 1GB RAM modules are sat in component level inventory (simple SKU), whilst also the ability to see how many modules are ‘available’, a figure to include those which are held in sub-assemblies.

If anyone has further insights into NAV functionality within this sector I’d be most keen to hear your thoughts.
