Forum Post: RE: Removing Spare Parts from Item in Inventory

Hi Theodore, the simplest way is to move items with spare parts removed into a different location. Then your stock count on the main location will be fine, and you will know exactly how many items you have with spare parts removed. When parts are put back, move the item back into the main location. The only downside is that you can't tell which spare parts were removed and I can't think of any 'standard' way of doing this. Dear all, expert, I need your help to solve the following issue: Every time we try to export a second excel file from NAV we get the following error: "MS Dynamics NAV Excel Add-in encountered an external error: Token replay has been detected. Please contact your system administrator." So the first export successfully exports to excel, however the second export results in an error. This means, we have to close the other document first, before we can export more files, exporting more files at a time is convenient to work. Specs on versions of software: Excel: Microsoft Office 365 ProPlus, version: 1701 MS NAV: MS Dynamics NAV 2016, version: NL Dynamics NAV 9.0 Best regards, Victor Vink

My company has the same requirement. What we do is possibly not a perfect solution but depending on how many stock lines you have it might be worth considering though it requires Production Orders and if you're not already using those will probably require quite a bit of extra setup. If Item ABC123 needs to be broken down to release a spare part SPAREPART1 we create a Production Order to make an item F-ABC123, consuming an ABC123 and with a negative consumption of part SPAREPART1 (i.e. you're creating a SPAREPART1 as a by-product). It's clear then to anyone that the F-ABC123 is not in saleable condition and you have a SPAREPART1 for your urgent repair. You then know that you will require a new SPAREPART1 to 'fix' the original item with another Production Order working the other way, i.e. consume the F-ABC123 and SPAREPART1 to make a new ABC123. You will need to find out or make a judgement call on the 'cost' of the SPAREPART1 to deduct from the cost of your ABC123 to give a value to the F-ABC123.

Forum Post: SAP Ariba looks to redefine 'good' with supply chain transparency

According to human rights organisation Anti Slavery, there is evidence of slavery in different stages of supply chains from the production of raw materials — for example cocoa, cotton, or fishing — to manufacturing every-day goods such as mobile phones or garments, and even at the final stage, when the product reaches the market. There are an estimated 20 million to 30 million forced laborers in global supply chains today. However, governments are starting to take note, with legislation in place in the United States and the United Kingdom. Proposed legislation in Australia, similar to the UK Modern Slavery Act, will help combat the inhumane practices still apparent. Big business is also stepping up to the plate. In 2015, global ERP giant SAP and its procurement arm SAP Ariba partnered with Made In A Free World, a network of individuals, groups, and businesses that work together to disrupt slavery and combat human trafficking. "Slave and child labour is rampant in supply chains around the world. But it doesn't have to be," founder and CEO of Made In A Free World Justin Dillon said previously. "We live in a digitally connected and data-driven economy. We have the tools and information needed to uncover slavery and end it." By bringing the very real issue of human trafficking in the supply chain to the attention of the companies around the world who use Ariba, the software giant hopes to "redefine good" in the global supply chain. Speaking with TechRepublic, Padmini Ranganathan, VP of Products & Innovation at SAP Ariba, said tracing the supply chain is an opportunity not many other organisations have. With the Ariba network boasting over 1 trillion dollars-worth of business-to-business transactions globally, Ranganathan said her organisation is uniquely placed to make an impact on wiping out forced labour. To Ranganathan, what is holding organisations back from having put transparency practices in place is the mammoth task of data aggregation. Even if an organisation was to gather the information in its ecosystem, there are still thousands of companies unaccounted for. It's also a very expensive task, she added. But by providing a cloud-based solution, Ranganathan said SAP Ariba Training Online is able to be the aggregator on behalf of its customers. It also helps that the organisation enables quite a large volume of commerce through its cloud procurement system. "We need to not just focus on cost and profitability, but also focus on the good and the impact this can generate," she said. "We can generate momentum in business, we help create that impact — not just cost, but impact." SAP Ariba has created a "good conscious marketplace", a place where buyers and sellers have transparency over each other's practices. "A supplier who is actually doing good can share that good with multiple buyers on the network," she explained. "We've uncovered 3,000 opportunities just in the last three months alone." Somewhere along the way, Ranganathan said the tech industry forgot that by creating so many systems, it was actually fragmenting the data and the context. So SAP Ariba pieced the information into a single suite connected back to SAP systems that gives the entire context from the customer, from the point of demand through to where from and what the company is sourcing. This is how supplier relationships are being established, Ranganathan said. SAP Ariba currently gathers third-party data from over half a million data sources.

Dears The items in the inventory module are linked to a UOFM (Piece), although, when dealing with these items I want to prevent entering decimals because the item doesn't have any fractions .. It should be sold and purchased in pieces 1 , 2, 3, 4 ...etc. I want to prevent entering anything wit decimals, the quantity should have integer number. How can this be done ?

Blog Post: Using off-shore resources in your Dynamics projects

$

Have you ever considered using “off-shore resources” for your projects? If you work in “the west” or should we just say in countries with an hourly NAV developer rate of USD +100, then most likely you have. Especially if you work on large projects. But have you ever been in a project using these so-called off-shore resources? And how did it go? My friend Peik has done this many time and have written a blog post about how to outsource your development tasks , especially to off-shore resources. Peik gives some tips on how to make your outsourced projects a success. They primary focus on: Project management Education Cultural differences Communication Documentation I completely agree with all of his comment’s and tips. If you decide to outsource your projects, then that’s a list you need to save and remember. Should you outsource your projects? Now that we know a little about how to do it, then the big questions is, if you should outsource your projects? If you read Peik’s post, then you also understand that there are a lot of things you need to focus on and give a lot more attention, compared to only using inhouse/sourced resources. You need a very experienced project manager/architect and often much more time on design, documentation and QA. Don’t expect that it comes easy. Face-to-face meetings between the inhouse and offshore teams are very valuable, not just via Skype with video. My personal experience has primary been gained by working as the ERP solution architect on large international NAV projects. So that’s in a customer environment. Peik’s recommendations are based on his experience in the partner channel. But they are just as valid when used by a customer managed inhouse NAV project. In the offshore projects I have worked in, we estimated about 15 minutes per outsourced hour for extra project management, communication and quality control. And that’s where you have “your own” team of more or less fully booked developers. If it’s a one-time project of less than 200-300 development hours, then I would say forget it. And still it could easily take you at least 2-3 project of that size, before you would start seeing the results your expected. If you are a customer, and your use a Dynamics partner who are using outsourced developers, then make sure to check out references first. If your project is the first they are outsourcing, then I would be scared. Which projects or tasks can be outsourced? The most successful tasks I have outsourced are within development. And here as already said, primary larger, pre-designed coding tasks. But the more you know your offshore team the smaller task you can assign them. If you have a large user base and a lot of user support, then that could also be an area, just watch time differences. You have to make sure that your team stay's the same as much as possible. Each time a new developer is assigned to your team, then expect the same delay in productivity, as if you hired a new in-house developer. Here you need to follow the same advises as if you are managing your own employees. If they get bored working on your project, they are more likely to go work for a different company. And much easier if they just have to switch tables. In the same way, don’t be afraid to tell the company hired them through, if some the developers you were assigned does not live up to your expectations after “a few tries”. Just as you would do if they were your own employees. Documentation and in-house standards As Peik also points out, documentation is very important. It always is, but here even more so here, as it is often the primary source of knowledge transfer. You need to extra carefully document everything. It’s not enough to write a simple requirement specification in a few lines, like just forwarding an error message from a user. If you want things to be done in a special way, then you need to say how. If you have a Skype video meeting, always remember the minutes with any decisions or any follow-up points. If you are in a company with large enough projects to consider outsourcing, then you probably already have always spend quite a lot of time documenting the processes and standards to be used. At least that’s been my experience as an ERP solution architect. But make sure that your outsourced team are aware of these standards. They should be as easy to use and as close to “Microsoft standards” as possible. Left is then only to enforce the standards, verify that they are followed. Have a strict code review, before merging any changes with your core system. Give a clear feedback, Skype is often much better than just an email. Would I recommend outsourcing? If you are not just doing a few projects, but to work with a good full-time team, over a longer period, then yes. I cannot recommend it unless you give it 100%, as it will take more than one project to get and see the benefits. To have success with outsourced resources you need to treat them exactly like you would treat any other in-house employees. Which is a lot harder, when they are not in your physical office, but 1000’s of miles away. If you take your time and extra efforts, then you may have great team of relatively low cost Microsoft Dynamics developers. Save Save Save
