Blog Post: Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central & NAV Insights: Docker for production; Integrating with Talent; Open source System App; Custom extensions

Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central and NAV pros shared their insights, arguing for updates through Docker, explaining integrations with Dynamics 365 Talent and assessing the new open source System App and custom extension best practices. Having a Business Central on-prem production environment in Docker Eric Wauters, writing on Waldo's Blog pondered whether it's possible to have D365 Business Central on-prem production environment housed in Docker. He offered his short answer: "Not yet." Wauters called for Microsoft to make Docker an alternative to NST deployments, thereby offering a way to continuously upgrade customers and perform hot fixes. Using Docker would allow hundreds of customers or users to be treated the same for a general upgrade or receive much more granular updates specific to their version. Wauters suggested hosting release branches for all currently supported releases in GitHub or DevOps. He inferred that if it is easier to update and use Business Central more customers will be on the latest version. He wrote: Just imagine – all you do to install an OnPrem Business Central customer is to install a real SQL Server for the database, and use the docker images provided by Microsoft for the NST.  Why only the NST?  Well, that’s the part that needs to be upgradable like every single month. But when on Docker, you know how easy it is to set up a new environment, right?  How easy would it be to upgrade, to set up UAT environments in other versions, to "play" with localizations…Well, as easy as we know already by using Docker. Currently, Wauters is already using this approach for his internal database. Integrating Business Central with D365 Talent .... Read More

Blog Post: What do I do wrong when C/SIDE debugger does not show my extension code although showMyCode is set to true?

While developing your own extension on NAV 2018 or "BC under version 15" you have the availability over 2 debuggers: the VSCode debugger and the C/SIDE (or should we call it Windows) debugger. Both serve a somewhat different scenario: VSCode debugger You want to run step-by-step through the code of your extension - being AL code - and from there might step into the code that resides in the NAV/BC installation you are programming against. Most probably the C/AL code of the standard application. C/SIDE debugger You want to debug a process starting from either the web or window client, most likely because of an error occurring. Chances are big you will hit C/AL code, but also AL code of your extension when you have showMyCode set to true. No way to get this effectively done with the VSCode debugger. But last week it did not work the way I expected it to do. One of my students of the Opgona Junior Training was expanding his extension on BC 14 with an XML import, using an XMLport. As the BC 14 web client unfortunately does not support the XMLport request page (but does on BC 15), I suggested to use the windows client to easily operate his solution. Running into an issue he wanted to debug and thus could only use the C/SIDE debugger. But whatever he did, the C/SIDE debugger did not show his code. And yes, showMyCode was set to true in the app.json of his extension. So I posted a tweet asking what was done wrong: A lot of people stepped in and eventually my former, and ever very helpful, MS colleague Duilio Tacconi came to the rescue: By adding a hidden setting to your customsettings.config C/SIDE debugger should show AL code: And yes, it makes the AL code visible in the C/SIDE debugger. But the question is why we do need this? Or more precise: since when do we need this? I was quite sure it was working without fine. On NAV 2018, on BC 13 and also on BC 14. Just checked on a docker installation of BC 14.1 and indeed working as I expected, and wanted. Allain Krikilion apparently had noticed the chance prevously this year: Did not make a full check but 14.7 clearly has this issue .

Hi All, I've loaded my creditors batch for payment in NAV and posted the batch to get my bank file number. But it did not appear in the usual location that the file transfers to . Is there anyway of re exporting the batch or getting the file again. Is is possible to unapply in bulk or would I need to do it for each vendor and then reverse the payment. I'm using the older version of NAV - Microsoft Dynamics 2009. Thanks Ludicia

Blog Post: Business Insights for Today's Financial Professionals

Business Insights for Today’s Financial Professionals: How Does Your ERP Measure Up? As more businesses move to advanced technologies, the pace of doing business has increased. Competitors are becoming more agile. Smaller, more nimble organizations can penetrate markets as disruptors, leaving established firms scratching their heads bewildered. Is your business able to evaluate changing market trends and adapt quickly?   Old School is Just Plain Old There was a time when having the finance team generate Excel spreadsheet after spreadsheet that was then flipped and manipulated into a report with pie charts and graphs that showed performance over the last month, or quarter, or year, or year over year.    That process is time consuming and error-prone. Worse, most of the time the information is not even actionable. How relevant is a report that shows sales figures or popular selling items from three months ago?    And yet, businesses all over the world continue to lock their finance team in a room for days at a time only to run the same drill over and over again.   Are the hours spent generating these spreadsheets and reports really giving your leadership team the insights they need?   Data in Real Time There is a better way.   Let’s face it: Once data has been exported from an ERP system into an Excel spreadsheet, it is no longer current, nor is it tied to your accounting system. Having access to data in real time within the ERP environment means that the analysis is being performed on truly up-to-the-minute data.   Today’s ERP systems, like Microsoft Dynamics NAV and Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central, allow users to access information across the business in real time. Moreover, the financial team can analyze that data with modern business intelligence tools, like Microsoft Power BI, and look even deeper using artificial intelligence and machine learning tools available in Microsoft’s Power Platform and Azure.   Making Sense of the Data So, whether we’re talking about big data or little data, what do we do with all this information?   The goal of the financial team is not to simply generate quarterly profit and loss statements, but to look into what those numbers are actually telling them and translating them for the leadership team. Rather than having your accounting staff spend their time extracting data and manipulating Excel spreadsheets to generate reports, leverage your ERP to do that work for you and let your staff use that time to offer true insights into your organization.   Looking Past the Numbers Lagging indicators show what happened in the past. Leading indicators predict what will happen in the future.   Reporting on past sales or revenue performance is not useful without insight into future performance. Financial professionals should be able to explain why past events occurred and offer prescriptive actions to the management team to improve performance.   Rather than measuring how well your organization met a particular set of Key Performance Indicators, Business Intelligence coupled with AI lets you develop strategies to overcome obstacles and achieve those KPIs. BI helps you visualize the data and identify future trends for your business. BI also helps you identify customer behaviors and track those products and channels that drive the most revenue. Organizations have successfully used BI to improve the customer experience, shorten the buying cycle, improve warehouse efficiency, and optimize the procurement process.   Making Actionable Data Understandable Once the financial team has worked to uncover the meaning behind the numbers, they need to translate this information in a way that makes sense not only to the leadership team, but the department leads as well.   For example, the warehouse manager won’t be interested in whether you use FIFO vs LIFO costing methods as much as he or she will be interested in optimizing their operation. How will your team’s insights be used to improve that individual’s area of responsibility and, by extension, the company’s overall financial performance?   Leverage Technology to Stay Ahead As a financial professional, you face many challenges. But there are tools available to automate the repetitive tasks of you and your team that will give you more time to analyze the raw data from your financial systems and offer actionable insights for your leadership team.   The best way to accomplish that is to make your company’s financial information relevant to the people who hold leadership roles within the organization and to present it in a way they can understand it.   ArcherPoint is equipped with the know-how to help you get the actionable insights you need out of Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central and NAV. DotNet variables are supported. Regarding the context: a DotNet variable (.NET dll) can runder on client or on server (you specify this when you declare the DotNet variable in NAV). If it's RunOnClient = true it runs on the client machine and must be placed in the addin subfolder of the RTC client. Otherwise it runs on the server side and must be placed in the addin subfolder of the service tier. Regarding the log: if it fails and you don't catch the exception inside the DLL, you should have an error logged in event viewer (server or client).

Blog Post: Step by Step Guide to JavaScript Control Add-in

$

JavaScript Control Add-in JavaScript Control add-in allows custom controls and visual elements for displaying and modifying data way beyond what you can accomplish with standard Dynamics NAV / 365 Business Central framework. While .NET development is dropped in Business Central extensions for web, JavaScript steps up to take its place. In this article, we will go step by step with increasing complexity on the basics of JavaScript add-in. JavaScript Control Add-in setup Preparations: Working Business Central 15 Wave 2 database Visual studio code (VSC) project, with symbols, already downloaded. Relevant Extensions I am using: Al language Al variable helper Waldo’s CRS AL Language Extension Files and folders We will start by creating folders to manage our extension: ControlAddin JsScript Pages Stylesheet After the folder is created, we will start by creating our control add-in setup. Create control add-in “SPLN Demo”. It can be done by using snippet tcontroladdin. After that you will have something like that: Leave it like that for a bit and create 2 files in the JsScript folder: Start.js and Demo.js. Leave them empty for now. In StyleSheet folder create StyleSheet.css with code:   We want our control add-in to be nice. Finally, add our files to control add-in links, comment out (or delete) unneeded parts. Test how add-in looks with different configurations. We will stick to this: Adding JavaScript control add-in to page Create a page and add our add-in after the general fast tab and publish our extension. We have our cornflower blue extension, which does absolutely nothing apart looking good. Let’s improve that. Creating Add-in pagepart Let’s put our control in a more convenient place – factbox area. Create page part with our add-in and put pagepart into page extension. Code should look like this: And modify page extension to: Also, remove maxheight from control add-in setup. Registering Javascript Control add-in events Having just an empty rectangle is not very useful.  Create an event to know when the page with Javascript control add-in is loaded. In order to do that we need to do 3 things: Create an event in the script file. Register event in Control add-in. Subscribe to event Add event to Start.js. This script is run when Javascript Control add-in is initialized and it is the earliest time we can access it. So add to Start.js: In control add-in: And subscribe to it in our page: Embedding Home Page Now that we created our control add-in, and confirmed that it is responding, let’s create something fun: let us embed our customer’s page into the card. We will do that in 2 steps: Add iframe Add a webpage to iframe To do that, modify demo.js with code: Do not forget to register and subscribe to the functions: and on page extension: To  make our page look a bit better, let’s replace With Try it out! Sending information from Business Central with action Of course, always loading the same page is not interesting: let’s add a dynamic Customer home page. Also, maybe we don’t want the Customer’s home page would load every time, so create action to load the Customer’s web page. Comment out our Ready() trigger and add to our PagePart: Modify procedure with parameter: then modify demo.js: add homepage, remove createIframe() call and move it to Start – we need only one frame, which we will modify instead of recreating a new one. Now, demo.js looks: And Start.js looks: Test it out! Finishing communication with NAV: create a button to call back At this step, we will create a custom button in control add-in to call back to BC. Create a function in demo.js to trigger event on button pressed. Update control-addin: and update our Pagepart: Make some modifications in style, feel free to use your parameters. Update stylesheet.css with And here we go: From this step by step guide, we learned how to create control addins, improve them, and to engage communication forth and back. There are lots of possibilities with embedding contents, communicating with other services, dynamically create the needed content, buttons, and functionalities. Want to learn more? Forum Post: filtering in gL Entry table very slow

Hello All, GL Entry table has around 120 million records. I have added the secondary key and indexes for the filter I use in page too. But when I run the page and use the filters on the page it takes a lot of time to filter in page as well as in the reports. There is no flowfield in table too. So, what could be the reason behind this?

Reasons could be a lot. Missing index, indexes that must be rebuilt at SQL level, database that is not well created (for example single data file) etc.

Index was rebuilt at sql level. Database has two data files and log in different disks. Still slowness issue could not be resolved.

Dear Sir, In NAV 2016, there is an Event function called OnBeforePostItemJnlLine in Codeunit 22 Item Jnl.-Post Line. I am subscribing the same function in my custom codeunit & call the Codeunit 22 Item Jnl.-Post Line to Post something. It's working with a message "There is nothing to Post" & it does not clear the Page. What to do without modifying any base ? Please suggest. Regards, Subrata Bauri

Business Central Wave 2 released in Fall of 2019 was the first release without the windows client. This deprecation represents the maturity of the web client and the steep catchup that it has done over the past few years to gain parity with the old windows client. The modern client allows the user to connect with Business Central over the browser, Windows 10 desktop app, or mobile apps on Android... Source

Forum Post: RE: create dynamics NAV error message when sales amount is 0

Hello, You would need to figure out which procedure you are calling in the codeunit like OnAfterCheckSalesDoc, then you would have to put an IF Statement that checks the value of the amount field in that procedure. Something along the lines of SalesHeader.SetRange("No.", "Your Document No") SalesHeader.Find('-') If SalesHeader.Amount=0 then begin Error('The Amount of the relate order "No.":=' +SalesHeader."No."+' cannot be 0.') If this helps you please mark the answer as helpful. -Chaz Kim
